Why you shouldn’t always do that thing you think you should

Whenever you feel that you ‘should’ do something, try stopping and thinking it through.

That feeling of ‘should’ might come from any of:

– a sense of obligation,

– or a feeling that you’d be letting people down,

– or wanting to please,

– trying to avoid people thinking badly of you,

– societal / family conditioning

– and many other possibilities.

But when we operate from a place of what we ‘should’ do, we are often going against our true selves, our own values and what matters to us. Many people always operate in line with their ‘shoulds’ and hence can end up resentful, unfulfilled, put upon or exhausted.

Instead I encourage you to pause. Ignore what’s expected. Or rather ignore what you THINK is expected. Think about your own values and what feels true for you. You could still choose to do the same thing but will be doing it from a place of really wanting to, a desire to show kindness or being aligned with your values.

Or you may choose to take a different path, one that is right for you. And that is rarely a poor choice. Your true self is your best self and the one the World needs most. Pls like / share. Sue X
