Follow Your Dreams

The theme floating around for me this week is all about following your dreams. It has shown up in several ways for me recently.

I had a lovely email last week from a former client sending me an update on her life, and how the work we had done in Coaching, a few years ago, had all come to fruition. The coaching back then had helped her to unearth her true desires for life and dream of a possible future. And here we are, after taking some brave decisions and listening to her heart, my client is literally living her dream. She has left her job, moved out of London and set up her own online business. The email included a gorgeous photo of the view from her window in the countryside. I LOVE getting those emails!

In the same week I did a free sample session with another potential client which ended up being about his big dream. At the end of a sample session I usually let the client know if I think we’re a good match, if coaching can help and whether I’d like to be their coach. In this case I really thought the guy was great but I said I could only take him on if he wanted to go for it and follow his big dream. A dream that he’s had for years. As I explained, I felt that anything else we coached on would merely be tinkering around the edges while there was a dream that would keep nagging at him.

And that’s what our dreams can do. Keep nagging at us until we do something about it. It can be a small dream e.g. having a dog. Or it can be a big dream of a different career, living somewhere different, meeting the right person etc. Whatever the dream is, there are always steps we can take to help make it happen.

But sometimes we don’t know what our dreams are. They can change and spring out of nowhere. I have a new dream that’s only come about in the last couple of weeks. My new dream is to write a book. I didn’t know I ever wanted to write a book – it’s certainly not something I’ve ever previously had an urge or desire to do. But it turns out that now I have that urge. It all started with the ‘Artist’s Way’ course that I’m doing, which in turn made me fancy going on a Writer’s Workshop last week, as the author of the course Julia Cameron was speaking. And over the course of the 2 day workshop it became apparent that I would actually quite like to write a book. Who knew? Certainly not me! Probably a book along the themes I write about in this blog and with a desire to help people to have more fulfilled, and easier lives. And now I’ve said it out loud, which feels a bit scary and like I’ll have to actually do it. Gulp.

My ponder for you today, should you choose to ponder it, is what might your dream(s) be? What would you love your life to look like? And what could you do to move one step closer to it actually happening? As a first step I think it’s really helpful to write the dream down. Be bold as you write. Dream big and imagine it happening. Sometimes those dreams really do come true. Please like/share. Sue X
